CODEC decompression error

I just got a new (faster) CD/DVD drive (read only), but now I get these sorts of errors several times on each CD I encode...

CODEC decompression error for '\\CdRom\Track12.cda'
Unable to Rip track - make sure correct Ripping method is selected and CD Drive supports digital audio extraction

... I even get them when I have the speed of the drive right down to 8x (it's a 40x read drive).

any ideas?

If it is doing it part way through ripping a track (ie not the beginning or end) I think it is the drive that is reporting an error, not sure why though.
