    Problems with FLAC files

I used dbpowerAMP to convert roughly 6,000 WMA Lossless files to FLAC. If I try to open any of these files in another application, i.e. Roxio EMC 8, I get the error:

This is not a valid or suported music file. The following audio file formats are supported: mp3, wma, wav, cda, m4a, ac3, flac, mpga, mp4, ogg, aac.

The same error occurs if I rip directly to FLAC using dmc Audio CD Input.

If I rip a file from CD to FLAC in EMC8, and then try to use dbpowerAMp to convert to another format (wma or mp3), dbpowerAMP gives me the error:

The CODEC required to decompress <file> could not be opened.

Coverting these WMAs to any other format in dbpowerAMP has worked fine and I've been able to use those files in other players.

If I convert a FLAC file created from dbpowerAMP to mp3, ogg or back to WMA, I am also able to use those files in multiple players.

I have the same problem using both 5.3 and Beta 5.3 CODECS.

Any suggestions or help in being able to use these FLAC files between applications or re-convert from WMA so that Roxio recognizes them would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    John

    Re: Problems with FLAC files

Have you tried looking at the available compression settings for FLAC in EMC8 and in dMC to make sure that you are using compression settings that each will recognize?

Could there be a difference in the tag settings for FLAC between these 2 programs?

Do you have any other programs that can play FLAC (Foobar, WinAmp with the FLAC plug-in) to see whether the EMC8 FLAC files and/or the dMC FLAC files play on those?

      Re: Problems with FLAC files

In Winamp, I can play the FLAC files created both by dbpowerAMP AND EMC8.

If I test the FLAC files with the FLAC frontend app downloaded from sourceforge.net, the version of the file ripped by dbpowerAMP tests OK.

If I test the FLAC ripped by using Convert CDs in EMC8, the test returns:

The FLAC stream may have been created by a more advanced encoder. Try
      metaflac --show-vendor-tag Harmony.FLAC
If the version number is greater than 1.1.2, this decoder is probably
not able to decode the file. If the version number is not, the file
may be corrupted, or you may have found a bug. In this case please
      submit a bug report to

Make sure to include an email contact in the comment and/or use the
"Monitor" feature to monitor the bug status.

Finally, when I run metaflac as suggested, I get the result:
      harmony.flac: ERROR: reading metadata, status = "FLAC_METADATA_CHAIN_STATUS_NOT_A FLAC_FILE"

I have posted all of this on the Roxio site as well.

If I get any useful information on that end, I will post it here as well.

      Thanks again!

        Re: Problems with FLAC files

It is interesting that WinAmp seems to be able to play these Flac files from EMC8 even though they don't test out in Flac FrontEnd.
And it is interesting that EMC8 can't read Flac files created through dMC.

Your real challenge, as I understand it, is to try to create Flac files that you can use with EMC8. Is this right?
Can you accomplish this with Flac FrontEnd?
Can you accomplish this with WinAmp?

(BTW-The non-beta Flac codec for dMC, the one available through Codec Central, is version 5.2, not 5.3 (although both are based on Flac 1.1.2); but I recognize that you did try both codecs).

Does EMC8 provide any information about their Flac codec (version # especially)?
Do you have any information on the Flac tagging system used by EMC8?

        Best wishes,
        Bill

Keep them as wma lossless? emc8 seems to support wma.

It sounds as though emc8 is not creating propper flac files (the winamp plugin might be older code that is not showing up the problem).
