    Problem converting mp4 to aac

    Hello,

I am trying to convert mp4-music files to aac. Therfore I am using dbpoweramp codec aactomp4. The result are aac-files of around 10-200 kb size and *.mp4.t1-files that have nearly the same size like the original mp4-files.

    What can/must I do???

    Thanks

Do you have both the AAC and m4a/mp4/Apple Lossless codecs installed?
(You need both of these as well as the AAC>mp4,mp4>AAC codec).

I take it the AAC files don't play. Can you tell us the properties (quality setting/bitrate, channels, bits, frequency) of your AAC settings and the (quality setting/bitrate, channels, bits, frequency) of your mp4 files?

Note taht the AACtoMP4 codec just puts a mp4 file in an AAC container, as is necessary for the iPod and some other players. A normal AAC format is a totally different beast, IIRC.

Mp4 is the container. AAC is an audio format that can fit into that container. The M4a/Mp4/Apple Lossless codec includes AAC by default. Spoon has stated:
This AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) codec handles .aac files, an .aac file is basically the same as a .m4a or .mp4 audio file, except the audio is not in an mp4 container. The majority of audio players (portables included) are compatible with .mp4 or .m4a rather than .aac audio files, dBpowerAMP has a separate .m4a codec. dBpowerAMP also has a AAC >> Mp4 and Mp4 >> AAC codec, this converts without quality loss (normally associated by compressing and decompressing audio) between .aac and .mp4, again this is a separate codec and can be installed from Codec Central.
(from the codec Help file for the AAC codec).

But the point that LtData raises is correct, namely that you may need to keep your file in m4a/mp4 rather than converting to AAC. If you need AAC outside of an mp4 container, then you may also need to be looking at what other properties your converted files need to suit your purposes. Hence, the questions I raised in my first post.

        Best wishes,
        Bill

          Thanks for the answers.

First the files I want to convert are created by neroaac-codec in audiophile quality.

After installing tha aac-codec as well conversion works fine, but the aac-files are not seekable, that means winamp doesn´t show a slider. Is this info within the mp4-container and is removed when converting?

          Thanks

Re: Problem converting mp4 to aac

There are technically two AAC codecs: the real AAC codec and the Mp4 >> AAC or AAC >> MP4 codec. The real AAC codec isn't in the .mp4 container. The files made by the MP4 >> AAC codec ARE in a mp4 container.
As for the seekable information, I'm not sure if that's built-in to the format, or if the converter has to add it.

In the latest WinAmp (5.11) the slider appears but automatically slides to the end and you cannot seek with it within a track. In my previous version 5.5, the position slider did not appear at all.

Is this info within the mp4-container and is removed when converting?
I think its a problem within the WinAmp AAC codec because dBpowerAMP Audio Player does not exhibit this problem. I have not checked other programs to see whether they do or do not have the same problem as WinAmp in this respect.

You might want to check for a WinAmp m4a/mp4 plug-in (since WinAmp does not appear to recognize m4a/mp4 files on its own). Perhaps a regular WinAmp user could recommend one.

              Best wishes,
              Bill

What's wrong with aacPlus? Do you have Winamp Pro? It comes with a better aac encoder.

                    Thanks for all answers.

I got the mp4 codec from rarewaves and everything works fine so far.

                    One thing to mention:

I realized problems converting a lot of files at once or files that are bigger than 15MB. So in my first try converting 700 files from mp4 to aac I can produce the error mentioned in my first post. The same thing happens, when I try to convert files that are bigger than 15MB. These two things seem to cause disturbance to mp4 to aac converter. Running the conversion a second time solves the problem.

                    yours
