converter making files too big

I have the db power amp music converter and it is making a ~4mb file into a ~30-40mb file. Why would it do this? Is there any way to make them back to the normal size?

It all depends what format you input file is and what output format you requested for the conversion.

If you convert anything to uncompressed wav then that results in the biggest file sizes, using 10MB per minute of audio.

For all other compressed formats, the higher the bitrate you select for your output file, the larger the file will be. If the output file is at a higher bitrate than your input file, then it will be bigger proportionately. Likewise if you go from mono to stereo or to even more channels.

To add to what Christina has said, converting from a lossy format (like mp3) to a lossless format (like Monkeys or Flac) will result in a dramatic increase in file size (though wave files will still be larger),

Is there any way to make them back to the normal size?

What were the characteristics of your original file(s) (bits, bitrate, frequency, channels) and of the much larger files you created (same properties)? Did you apply any DSP effects (such as volume normalization)?

If you converted your files from a lossy format to wave or to a lossless format, you should be able to convert them back without any appreciable loss of quality (although if you kept your original files, you would be perhaps slightly better off just keeping your original files.
