The CODEC required to decompess 'C:\file.flac' could not be opened.

    Hello,

I am trying to convert a recording from flac to mp3. There are 17 files and all were included on the same disc. When I try to convert the files, files 4 to 17 convert fine, however for files 1 to 3 I get the error: The CODEC required to decompress 'D:\bd05-07-24\bd05-07-24d1t01.flac' could not be opened.

Does anyone know what could be happening? I assume all the files require the same CODEC and that I have the correct CODEC installed...

Does it seem like the first few files are somehow corrupted? Test conversions don't work and I can't convert into wave...

    thanks,
    sean

There is a known problem with some Flac tags.
Try the new Flac codec available from the beta forum here:
An update to flac (ok decoder was rewritten from scratch), to solve the IDTag crashing problem. Also .fla files are only decoded as an option (conflicts with Flash files). Download: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/beta/dBpowerAMP-codec-flac.exe 538KB If you were having crashing problems with ID Tag writing, please post your

Please let us know if you are already using the Flac beta codec or if that codec does not work for these files either.
In that case, you may want to look at the tags and/or file properties for these files in terms of bits, bitrates, channels, frequency and the output properties for your mp3 files (same variables).

    Best wishes,
    Bill

      Thanks for your help Bill.

I was already using that version codec (5.3), and I'm not sure how to view bitrate, etc. on the flac files (the popup window for dbpoweramp says the files are 0kb but windows says they are like 25 MB).

Also, there are no tags entered for any of the files.

      thanks,
      sean

You can right-click on one of these files, select properties, select Id Tag and look at file details.
There are a couple of other tests. Can you play these files? If so, in what program?
If you cannot play them, that would tend to suggest that the files might be corrupt, as you suggested.
Do you know how these tracks were created?
Are they on your hard drive or a cd-r/rw?

        Best wishes,
        Bill

If the "Edit Tag" properties don't look right, click the "Summary" tab and click Advanced. I'm not entirely sure if it will show your files data there or not, but it may.

Try a different program (a player), if that cannot open the file then it is corrupted.

when I view the file properties and ID3 tab, there are no tags entered at all. Also, it says the file is a flac file of length 0:00, but it does display the filesize correctly.

I haven't been able to play the files because I don't have the correct player. Can someone suggest a good player?

I received the files on a CD-R. Here is some of the information from the info file: LB-2977, (55min+47min), Source: DPA 4021 > SD 722 (96k/24), Peak 4.14 (sample rate conversion; bit-rate reduction)> xACT.

              Thanks,
              Sean

You can find a list of players (or plug-ins for players) here:
A free, open source codec for lossless audio compression and decompression

In addition to dAP (dBpowerAMP Audio Player), there is a Flac plug-in for WinAmp, and Foobar 2000 will play Flac files.

You might also want to consider using the Flac Frontend Endcoder/Decoder and/or FLACTester. Flac Frontend has a function that allows you to check the integrity of a Flac file. I have not used FLACTester but it looks like it would do the same. There is a link for both at the same page I linked above in this post. I believe you can also try this site here for Flac Frontend: http://mikewren.com/flac
