My CD Writer and CD Input have stopped working!

    Hello

When making copies of audio CDs (I'm making compilation CDs) the CD input has slowed down so that it now takes 6 or 7 minutes to copy a track - it gets to 50% converted in a reasonable time, but then slows right down to a crawl.

Then when it does claim to have finished, the track doesn't appear on the left hand column on the CD writer (it does seem to be on the hard drive though, because when I try to copy it again it asks if I want to overwrite the existing file).

I've also tried to convert audio CDs to mp3 to burn to a CD, but I have exactly the same problem.

I have a very slow steam-driven computer running Win98, but this problem has only just started - I've been burning CDs without any problems (apart from it being a bit slow) for nearly 2 years.

Hope my explanations make sense - does anyone have any advice?

    Try ripping to 'Test Conversion'

OK, that worked - much quicker than my real rips! However, the problem with ripping to audio and mp3 persists.

Use priority below normal in dMC, it actually speeds up things.

Is your HD fragmented by any chance? A defrag may be in order.

In the PowerPack in dMC Audio CD Input, are you using rip to ram? How much ram? Best to set that on Auto I think. Rip & encode at the same time?

How much ram do you have in all ? How much available when you run dMC ?

Any DSP effects that you are applying automatically?

How about ripping speed as give in dMC Audio Input Options?

Are you using dCW at the same time too? That's what I think I'm understanding.

You might want to consider checking the settings mentionned here (in the FAQ re:Converting Speed):http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=4620

          Best wishes,
          Bill

Still have the same problem - gets to 50% converted then slows to a crawl. The dCW doesn't open automatically when the rip is finished - I thought it was supposed to (?)

This happens despite taking upyour suggestions:

I set to priority 'below normal'
            I defragged
I'm ripping to ram, set to auto, with rip and encode at the same time
I have a pitiful amount of ram, with no idea how much is available when I run dMC. This hasn't been a problem until the past few days though, and nothing has changed on my PC - no new software or anything.
DSP effects - Normalise sound. But again, this didn't cause a problem until recently.
Ripping speed is set to maximum in Audio input options
Am I using dCW at the same time? Yes, but it didn't seem to be a problem. Now I have tried not running it at the same time, but it doesn't open once the rip has finished, and when I do run it at the same time the track that's been ripped doesn't appear in the playlist, although it does get ripped to the hard drive.

What have you installed lately? Any upgrade to anything?

The only thing that gets updated regularly is the AVG anti-virus software. I haven't downloaded any windows upgrades or patches recently.

I have already seen the post about IDE controllers - I am using Win98 - I found the primary and secondary IDE channel settings, but it is set out differently than under XP, so I didn't really understand what I could and couldn't mess with, so I did nothing.

I also downloaded the NeroSpeed program , as suggested, after this problem occurred, but it makes no difference.

Thanks very much for the suggestions and advice so far, by the way!

Can we say maybe the problem involves dCW ?

Have you installed all the latest versions of both dMC and dCW ? Look in the beta section for the latest beta of dMC .

For windows 98 there are a few things to take into account, which you may have already done before if it worked though : http://www.dbpoweramp.com/Windows95-Update.htm

                        Try with volume normalize off.
