The CODEC required to compress 'xxx.mp3' could not be opened.

I am running on Win XP sp2 w/ admin rights.
I am try to convert a xx.aac file to mp3 using dMC.

I get the error: The CODEC required to compress 'xxx.mp3' could not be opened.
The resulting file is of 0k size.

I have tried several codecs without success.
I have view'd a few post on this subject but they don't seem to apply.

    Bitrate: 128 (mp3 Lame)
    Stereo / Frequency: 44100 Hz

I have also tried converting to Wave and it crashes but I guess that is for another post.

    Thanks!

Try doing a test conversion of your .aac file.
This is the same as if you were converting to mp3 except that where you would select mp3 as your output format in dMC, select "Test Conversion", no write.
If the file will not test convert, it suggests that dMC has issues reading the .aac file. The fact that you cannot convert to wave is suggestive of problems reading the file.

If the file test converts ok, can you tell us about the frequency, channels and bitrate of your .aac file (this message frequently occurs when there is an incompatibility between the settings of the input file and the desired output file)?

If the file does not test convert ok, it would still be helpful to know the characteristics of your sourcce .aac file. It would also be helpful to know whether you can play this file ok and, if so, in what programs you can play it.

    Best wishes,
    Bill

Try downloading the latest dMC beta (link below) and the latest AAC codec from Codec Central.
How many channels are in your aac file? If its more than 2, first convert to a WAV file of equal channels, then to a WAV file of 2 channels, and then to your desired format.

What is the frequency of your file? Again, convert to a WAV file of equal frequency, then a WAV file of frequency 44100Hz. Before you do this, make sure "Professional Frequency Conversion" is checked in dMC Configuration (Start --> Programs --> dBpowerAMP Music Converter --> Configuration --> dMC Configuration). Then convert to your desired format.

        xoas:

I tried doing the test conversion and the program appear'd to be doing somthing. I saw a few bars on the progress task bar and after 7 seconds the program crashed.

Sorry I didn't mention this before but this file can be played w/o a problem on WinAmp. I actually extracted a new copy of the file from it's original source (a .mkv file)

LtData: I downloaded your product yesterday and it is release 11. The beta files that appear on your link seem to be older versions, beta's of R11? Am I missing something?
The frequency of the file is 44100 which is what I am trying to convert to.

I did check the Prof. Freq. Conversion as you suggested but the conversion still crashed.

The details of the error summary is:
        AppName: musicconverter.exe AppVer: 6.0.0.2 ModName: aac.dll
        ModVer: 4.1.4.2 Offset: 00001a75

Hope this helps to troubleshoot the problem.

The beta linked to is for r11.5 not r11.
How many channels are in this aac file?

Edit: hmm, normally if the Test Conversion fails, dMC cannot decode the file for some reason. Mabye use your Winamp but have your output as "Wave Disk Writer" or whatever its called as you play the song, and hten convert the resulting WAV file.

You may still want to try LtData's original suggestion to try to convert to 6 channel, 44.1 kHz wave then to 2 channel wave and then to mp3.
I'm unfamiliar with the WinAmp Wave Diskwriter although this sounds very feasible also.
Another approach might be to uninstall the dB m4a/mp4 faac codec and to try using the WinAmp Plug-In Input decoder (available from Codec Central, link at top of the page) and configuring it to use the in_mp4.dll from WinAmp. This might not work but if it did work it might be quicker than the WinAmp Wave Diskwriter or the other workaround of using dB Auxilary Input to record this track as it plays in WinAmp (as outlined here: http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=7318 ).
