    Christina,

Yes, as I assumed this was required to actually play .ra files (as is the case with me).

Its appearance, I would suggest, is meant to LOOK like WMP!

    Cheers,

So let me get this: Media Player Classic did not manage to play the short .ra file or any .ra file for that matter?

Try this. Open Media Player Classic. View > Options > Player >Formats > and select the file formats you want it to play for you. In particular enable the Real Media formats you see there. Hopefully it should work after this to play the .ra files .

        Christina,

        I'm causing confusion!

I've installed "Real Alternative" which gives me the DirectShow decoder (for dMC) and Media Player Classic (so I can play .ra files).

However, unlike you. It would appear that I cannot play .ra files in the standard Windows Media Player (not that that's a real problem, excuse the pun!).

I think I am right in saying that Media Player Classic is NOT related to Windows Media Player (the former being released under the GNU General Public Licence).

        Thanks again,

        Mark

Correct, MPC and WMP are not related in anything other than appearance.
However, if you cannot play your .ra files in WMP but can play them in RealAlternative, there seems to be a problem with either the file or your RealMedia DirectShow Splitter.

Re: .ra to .wav gives an empty file!

            LtData,

Your hint encouraged me to experiment. I was fixed on the idea that dMC was the problem, in that it has an issue with short (say 15 second) .ra files. Yes, you guessed it, I have been trying to play the short .ra file in WMP …. Doh!

I downloaded a long (> 1 minute) .ra file, and (of course) dMC converted it to an mp3, it played in MPC and it played in WMP.

So the issue must lie with the RealMedia DirectShow Splitter itself?

I note from the installation :

            RealMedia DirectShow splitter [version 1.0.1.0]
Allows you to play RealMedia files in all DirectShow enabled players. Without this filter RealMedia files can only be played in Media Player Classic.
However, this filter only works with files that are on your harddrive. It does NOT work with streaming content. Therefore it is highly recommended to use Media Player Classic, because MPC does support streaming content.

            So I think I'll keep MPC …..

            Many thanks to all!

You could use Auxiliary Input to record the song as you play it and then convert it.

But that's interesting that the Splitter doesn't like short .ra files. Mabye this should be noted somewhere?
