    Handling formats

I need a little advice on the best way to handle some files I have so as to get them on to a portable MP3 player. A lot of my music collection is on CD so I understand that is a straight rip to the MP3 or WMA file size I want and load to the player. The problem I have is that another (large) part of my music is in the form of WMA files at 320kbps. I want to get these down to the 128/192kbps mark for the portable player. I would like any advice anyone can offer on the best way to do this and preserve quality. Do I further compress the already compressed files to WMA or should I convert to wav then compress to the size I want in either MP3 or WMA? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

because they are already compressed wma files there is no point in converting to wav first and then to 128mp3.

any transcoding will result in a loss of quality. trial and error.
