    wave or wavpack codec

    Hi,
which codec is the best wave or wavpack?
    is wave codec lossless, too?

is it sensible to turn wave files to wavpack files or must use original source ( cd )?

and 1 more; wave 5.1 files for DVD-A?

    thanx for the interest :]

    Re: wave or wavpack codec

Uncompressed wave is the original recording. Losslessness is expressed with respect to the original uncompressed wave file. An audio track on an audio cd is really a wave file with a pointer to it called a .cda file. You get to see only the .cda file when looking at the track listing of a cd on a computer.

Wavpack is lossless, and it may be comprssed to some degree. Wavpack is less portable, as few devices support it.

If you wav files are uncompressed PCM wav, then you can use those to convert to any lossless format with no fear. If the wav file is compressed wav, then that's a lossy format, so converting to a lossless format will not recover whatever was lost previously.

    Cannot advise on dvd formats.
