    Skipping existing files

This is driving me crazy. I'm using dbPowerAmp to create WMA versions of ripped MP3s for my portable music player. When I first installed it I'm absolutely certain I managed to get it to convert only those files where a WMA did no already exist. Now, a few weeks later, whenever I rip some new MP3s and try to use dbPowerAmp to convert just the new ones to WMAs, it tries to reconvert the lot. Am I missing something??

Are you using File Selector? Or are you finding the individual files to convert through Windows Explorer?

Yes, I'm using the file selecter. My recollection is that there was no indication that you could skip existing files until the very last dialog box before the coding started, where you are asked what to do about existing files. However, now the only options appear to be OK (which starts recoding everything, including the existing files) or Cancel (which aborts the coding completely).

Sorry it took me a while to reply. I thought I had asked for an email when anyone replied to my post, but nothing arrived - probably my fault!

You know what, I'm still not very sure what the problem is. I'll keep looking into it, but in the meantime, give us more details on the problem.

UPDATE: I think the File Selector only lets you convert folders, not like "New files in this folder" or "only convert the new files in this folder".

          Re: Skipping existing files

Thanks for the reply. Here is a more complete description of the problem:

My MP3s are stored in a folder structure that reflects the genre\artist\album (e.g. Jazz\Miles Davis\Sketches of Spain). This structure is created automatically by my ripping software. I rip at a bitrate of 320k as I'm generally playing back through the Hifi.

However, this gives big files, so for transfer to my portable MP3 player I want to create a converted copy of these files in another location. I've chosen WMA at about 64K as this format seems to give the best size/quality compromise.

So, I want to use dbPowerAmp to keep my WMA collection "in sync" with my MP3 collection. The idea is that, after a ripping session I just point the file selector at the top level of my MP3 folders and tell it to convert anything that does not already exist in the WMA section.

When I first tried dbPowerAmp I tried this out - I converted a few files, added some new ones and then re-converted. My recollection is that on the final dialog box before the conversion starts (the one that lists which files already exist) I had an option NOT to overwrite the existing files. However, coming back to it a few weeks later, the only choices appear to be OK (which overwrites the listed files and re-converts everything) or Cancel (Which exits without converting anything).

Here is an example. imagine I've added a Blues album to my ripped collection. I point the file selector at the Blues folder and select everything in it. Click on Convert, check the conversion settings and click on the Convert button. The final dialog box appears (I've got a screenshot but can't see how to put this in the post).

This correctly lists the existing files, which I don'twant to convert. However, if I click on OK, then all of the files in the folder are converted, including the ones listed. If I click on Cancel, then nothing is converted - the file selecter re-appears immediately.

I'm absolutely certain that I could do what I wanted to when I first installed dbPowerAmp - this feature was the main reason for choosing it in the first place! Now I can't get it to work.

I see what you're trying to do. And I remember being able to do this in earlier versions. I'll try and contact the moderators and see if they can help.

Did anyone ever get a resolution to this? I have the same problems with skipping existing files.

The 'Power Pack' add a 'No to All' button on that page.
