    Converting just produces hiss

When I convert files to MP3 and play them back I just get a very loud hiss. The original file format seems to make no difference nor does the programme used to play the MP3 file. In Windows explorer the file appears normal and all the embedded information seems to be there. Anybody any idea what might be causing this?

Check your Volume Controls (right click volume icon in task bar) for playback. You may have the microphone activated - mute it. And unmute all other sources. You should see Master Volume, Wave, a bunch of other sources in there. If you don't, click Properties > PLayback and select all the sources you have. After OK, you'll see them all. Make sure the volume sliders are all the way up (except fro master volume which shoudl be where it is comfortable) and they are all unmuted except for microphone.

I've checked the volume controls and that's not the problem. Non-converted files play back fine. I think it's a problem with the conversion process somewhere.

Is your version of dMC registered so that you actually have the license for encoding to mp3?

Perhaps you're converting to incompatible specs, though usually this just results in an error message.

And what are you converting from? Could the inout files be encrypted somehow?

Have you tried to convert to, say, wma, and see if that converts ok?

Yeah, test by converting to other audio formats.

My version of dMC is not registered but I'm within the 30 day trial period.

The problem isn't with the input files - they play fine and I've tried several different files with the same result.

I've just ried converting to different formats. Converting to wav produces the same result and trying to convert to wma brings up an error message to say can't open the codec.

For .wma you need the codecs fro Codec Central.

A conversion to .wav should have worked ok, unless the paarmeters were wrong somehow.

Uninstall everything and reinstall a fresh copy.

Make sure all the dMC programs are installed to the same folder, including the codecs. That folder is best left as c:\Program Files\Illsutrate as initially proposed by the installer.

Also make sure you're signed is as admin when you install and when you use it.

And make sure your dMC configuration is correct. When I first installed the program, for some reason, Explorer file info popups didn't work so I had to go through dMC configuration. Now everything is fine!

Make sure you are converting (from) 44.1KHZ 16 bit stereo files.
