Can't get cbr Ogg

I have dMC 11 with Ogg Release 12, ogg 1.1.0 (among others) installed.
I tried to convert some ape-files to Ogg and chose constant bitrate in the pulldown menu.
I slided the slider to 256 kbps. According the helpfile this must be possible.
However, after conversion the Ogg-file is vbr.
I have re-installed the Ogg-codec but to no avail.

What am I doing wrong?

wait, what do you mean by VBR? Ogg Vorbis is a little confusing when dealing with VBR and CBR.

When you hover your mouse over the new Ogg Vorbis file, does it pop up saying it's a CBR file or VBR? If it says it's CBR and when you play it, the bitrate changes, THIS IS NORMAL. I'm not sure why there is even a CBR choice when converting to Ogg Vorbis, but there is. I'm pretty sure Ogg Vorbis CBR and VBR are pretty much the same. While you're playing the song in , say like Winamp 5.08e, the bitrate will change a lot.

CBR is useful for streaming songs over the Internet. If there will be no streaming, then VBR is the best choice, as Ogg is optmized for this.

Ogg does not have a real CBR mode, just an emulated one.

Thanks for the clarifications.
The tag says it's constant, winamp says another thing, like Neil said.
I didn't know it was normal.
I usely use variable, but was just trying out some settings.

stick to vbr if it's gonna stay on your hard drive.

It was a typo. He meant "emasculated"

Spoon's use of "emulate" was not a typo. Neil, you should get yourself a decent dictionary. I quote from the 'New Oxford Dictionary of English'.....Emulate: match or surpass (a person or achievement), typically by imitation. Computing: to reproduce the function or action of (a different computer or software system).

i KNOW what the defintion of emulated is. However, in this case, I can't understand how CBR Ogg Vorbis can be "emulated"?

Mabye next, we look up sarcasm? :p
But I think it says emulated in that it doesn't actually have a method to fix the bitrate, but it figures out an approximate way to do it.

So Ogg Vorbis uses an approximation to do CBR? Interesting...
