dMC ALAC conversion and filenames with 64+ characters

Hi,

I am just beginning to play around with dMC. The reason I came to use dMC was that it seems to be the only program that can convert Apple Lossless files (ALAC) to other formats while preserving the tag info (correct me if there actually is another solution!).

I found one major problem so far: It is not possiple to convert ALAC files with a filename that has 64 or more characters (including extension). If I try to convert them I get the message "'...' could not be opened". 63 and less characters work fine, though. Is this a bug? Can it be fixed?

Its actually a limit with the Quicktime library.

Read the documentation, quicktime is only 63 characters or less.

Thanks for your reply. That's a sad thing to hear... Many of my files have filenames longer than 64 chars, so now I'll have to rename them all, convert them and rename them back using the tag info.... Still better than having to enter all the tag info again, though.

out of curiosity Andreas, how do you have file names longer than 64 characters? I've never even exceeded 45 on my files.

It depends on the file-naming convention he uses. I've known people that have: track# - artist - album - track title.
In fact, here's the filename of one song in my library: 10 - A Perfect Circle - Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums.ogg. That's 81 characters. Throw in the album name, space, and hypen for a bonus of 10 extra characters.
And that's not counting the 4 character file extension.

wow. I wasn't aware that people have song filenames that long! I just use the folder containing the music file(s) to display the album, artist, and year release date.

But even the track title is 57 characters :p

ok then, my response to that, LtData, is: Can someone edit the source code for the ALAC codec or whatever so that it'll accept more than 64 characters? ^_^

Read what spoon said in this post, neil. It is a limit with QuickTime itself, so you will have to bug Apple about fixing it. :(

However, like Microsoft, bugging a company like Apple is futile. They don't read the complaints.
