it's an .m4a file that I downloaded from the music store on itunes today. I can't convert it because it keeps giving me that error message. What am i doing wrong?

You are not doing anything wrong! All iTunes-downloaded files are copy-protected and can not be converted simply into other formats. Read the User Guide in iTunes.
