WinXP. I have NEC1300a DVD/Writer & LG DVD Player. Ripped plenty of CD's already OK. Was using NEC & dbpoweramp to rip an album, Got stuck on last track (New CD, did not semed scratched). After this failed attempt the NEC won't play Audio CD's very well, very jittery and clicky. dbpoweramp or WinOnCD both only now manage ripping at only x3-6 (To Wav) use to be x10-15 easy. Thought drive must have died (Only 14months old). Did same thing on my other Drive (In same computer) and failed again and now this drive v.poor audio playback and ripping x3!!. Disconnected drives, restarted. Restored back a few days. CDSpeed seems to let me choose x32 or maximum but not difference. CD in questions plays fine in domestic player, not scratched or warped. Playing any CD in either drive now rubbish. Data seems OK'ish, but again think slow. Help!!!!!
ripping audio seemed to break 1 drive & now the other!

Re: ripping audio seemed to break 1 drive & now the other!
Alright, here's probably what happened. When a large number of CRC errors happen at once, XP switches your drive to PIO mode. Here's how to check to see if this is your problem. Go to your system properties, click the Hardware tab, then click Device Manager. Next click the plus sign beside "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller" and click both "Primary IDE Controller" and "Secondary IDE Controller." Click advanced settings and check to make sure both devices are set to "DMA if available." If they are set to PIO and you cannot deselect this, you will have to exit the property window and uninstall that IDE channel. Note that if it is your primary channel, you probably cannot do this. After it uninstalls, click Action --> Scan for hardware changes. This will reinstall your IDE controller.

Re: ripping audio seemed to break 1 drive & now the other!
Thank you so very much. I uninstalled secondary and both CD's working now. I had thought of DMA but with one CD on Primary with HardDisk & Other on Secondary and the primary was still saying Ultra DMA. Why removing just secondary fixed primary I don't know but also don't care as it's fixed. I also would not have thought that lack of DMA would have slowed so much that would not even play normal CD's! Thanks Again. Greg.Comment
