Cannot convert because file can not be opened

    Hello,

Can somebody help? Getting the following error message when I try to convert. From MP3 to MP3 (Lame). This is music downloaded from www.weblisten.com in WMA format which shows up as MP3 (?), but can only be played in Windows Media Player (V9) and NOT in REAL player?

The file 'E:\My Music\Weblistengden\WebListenGDen\Albums\CESARIA EVORA\Lua nha testemunha _.mp3' could not be opened.

I have power pack for dbpoweramp installed. Is it a codec problem? Was not able to fix it.

    Thanks,
    PF.

Do you mean the .wma file actually has the extension .mp3??? If so, rename the file to give it the .wma extension. But probably it is a protected file so you may not be able to convert it by normal means in any case.

Do a test conversion (no write) and see what dMC has to say. What are the specs of that file anyway? (hover over the file in Explorer and see what is being reported).

Re: Cannot convert because file can not be opened

      Christina,

      Stupid question how to rename?

File extension is indeed .mp3 but will not play in Real player, protected no, bitrate 64 kbps, type MP3 Audio, attribute A, length (m:ss): 0:00, orginal size 0 kB, size 2031 kB (for instance).

Error message Real player: this clip cannot be played, it contains unexpected data and may be corrupt

      Hope this is of use.

      Thanks for your help.

      Pieter F.

To change an extension, you will probably have to enable viewing all extensions. Go to folder options, click View, then uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types." Click OK, then browse to your file. Right click on the file and click rename, then change the .mp3 to .wma.

Since the PopUpInfo didn't read the bitrate or song length or any other data, it doesn't seem to be a real mp3 file.

It's like it cannot even read the CD-rom, but I can still play music from it.
            Very wierd...

I downloaded and saved to disk a free song from that site. It saved as an asf file compressed with wma Version 8. It will play for me with either WMP or Real Alternative. I can easily convert to to mp3 with DMC.

Have you installed the .wma system codecs and the wma dMC codec?

Re: Cannot convert because file can not be opened

OK renaming works and with .wma extension it plays in REAL player. It is WMA Version 8 format. So far so good. So is there a trick to rename all these downloaded fake .mp3 files (because I have downloaded a lot) into .wma? After that I can then convert them again to proper MP3 with dmc, correct?

Thanks a lot for all your advice!

Use a download manager like GetRight to ACCURATELY save those audio files to the CORRECT extension. GetRight is availible at http://www.getright.com

Or you can switch to FireFox......^_^

Never mind, I found out the problem. Miraculously, the codec somehow disappeared from its folder. I've been using it for months converting to wma's, so how it vanished is a mystery.

Are you using any of those registry cleaner programs that may detect that you have multiple versions of the same file and decide to delete all and keep just one?

I don't have kids, the other person who uses it wouldn't delete random things, and as far as I know I do not have a registry cleaner (unless it's built into a piece of software that I have, but I kinda doubt it).
Just add this to one of the mysteries of Microsoft Windows...
