ape to mp3 - size limitation?

I'm trying to convert an large ape file; it's an image of the whole CD and comes in at 322MB.

I need want to convert it to MP3 (lame) for my portable player, but I get this message:

The file 'D:\Temp\CDImage1.ape' could not be opened.

The file is not open in any other player, browser, tag editor etc. (And I've restared my PC just to be sure of this.)

I tested dMC on smaller (track size) ape files with no problems.
The large ape playes in WMP9 and WAmp5.
I have tried converting the large ape to other formats (WAV, OGG) with the same problem.
I have 7GB of free disk space on the drive.

    Thoughts?

Your ape file may be corrupted or not an ape file at all. Read the posts at the following link:

The file playes fine in Winamp and WMP (as noted). MonkeyAudio was able to convert it to a wav file. So the ape must be ok.

I forgot that MonkeyAudio could do this (duh), and have since used dMC to convert the wav to MP3

Thanks for the push. It's too bad that dMC couldn't do it in one step though.

The monkey codec was updated a few weeks ago to a new version - 3.99 compatible.

          You 'da man!

But why did the old codec work with the smaller .ape files?

          Just wonderin'
