    Curiosity on Professional Frequency Conversion...

OK! I recommended dMC to five of my friends at school, and they all took it. They installed it WITHOUT Professional Frequency Conversion but they say the sound quality is fine. I installed it WITH Professional Frequency Conversion checked off. I think the audio sounds better, but is it just a placebo effect? Does Professional Frequency Conversion really sound any better than not checking it off?

And if it does sound better, why not just make it a default to be checked off already when you're installing it?

To put the reasoning in this thread:
PFC is only used when the Frequency is changed in a conversion.

Re: Curiosity on Professional Frequency Conversion...

I've been away from the forum too long! Given there's a poll on the subject with this tread, I thought I'd add my comments / questions here.

Daren posted a most helpfull comment on the advantage of Professional Frequency Conversion back in the thread http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=3874

I'll add my two bits worth: it can be very hard to hear the value of Professional Frequency Conversion in some music - especially when there are lots of instruments in the mix. It really shows its value when you have a solo, melodic instrument. The harmonic distortion produced by the non-professional frequency conversion on purer tones like flute or pan-flute starts to sound like clipping distortion.

We end up using the Professional Frequency Conversion a fair bit here at HCJB when we export our Dalet radio automation system audio files (all recorded at 48KHz) for internet or CD distribution, usually reducing the sample rate.

Now for a question - I no longer see on the Codec Central page which codecs incorporate Professional Frequency Conversion. How can I know for sure whether or not a codec includes this capability. I recall that the built-in Wav and MP3 encoders use it, as well as recent encoders for WMA, Ogg Vorbis, MP2, AIFF and Real Audio. But I'm wondering about the MP4/AAC encoders, and possibly others?

                      Thanks so much.

Re: Curiosity on Professional Frequency Conversion...

That column in Codec central was removed because all the major codecs made use of Pro Frequency conversion, a big update is underway for R12 of dMC and pretty much all codecs will be pro frequency capable.

im still using 10.1 so maybe that has something to do with my restults....

just ran a little test professional freq converstion
                          44100 -> 32000

                          not enabled: took 16 seconds
enabled: took 15 seconds (i thought it was supposed to be slower)

but with it enabled.. sounded ever so slightly better to me

Note: Professional Frequency Conversion is a Reference-only feature in dMC r12 and above.

The fact this thread got new status was due to the poll question, not to the post previous to yours, which was from 2005.
