Are you signed in as an administrator on your XP system for all these installations? Likewise for uninstalling through Control panel.
You may have to remove all the dBpowerAMP programs and codecs fro Control panel > Add/Remove programs. Reboot.

Check your file associations now. Most audio file types should be associated with WIndwos Media Player. If not, open WIndows Media PLayer > Tools > Options > File Types and select all.

Now reinstall all your dBpowerAMP programs (converter, codecs, player) to the same folder, as proposed by the dB installer, i.e. c:\Program Files\Illustrate.

With the latest dMC instalaliton there is a little folder of audio file icons that you can use in Explorer > Folder Options > File Types to change the default icon for various audio file types.

Use dAP Configuration to associate the files you wish with dAP. That should give you the options of a couple of dAP icons to chose from, the guitar being one of them.

Been there done that long before coming here. Yes I am the administrator and am signed in as such.

this situation is very weird....have you scanned your computer for viruses? Also, have you tried reinstalling your OS?

Wrong person, look again. Someone else said that. Media Player exists and works fine. The problem revolves (for me anyway) with the icons and the lack of any config files in the Illustrate directories. Can I simply recieve a patch that repairs that portion of dBpowerAmp? Since installing a paid and registered version of Music Converter and then installing (after properly uninstalling) dBpowerAmp, I lack those files. I cannot enter and config file associations in dBpowerAmp because they do not exist.

And before someone asks yet again, before installing all Illustrate programs were uninstalled and directories expunged. Each was installed multiple times and yes more than one down load was tried to attempt to correct a possible corrupt down load.

I am not the same person who started this thread. Please understand that I am trying to resolve a similar situation, but, I am not MacDude.

Just so you know, and in case others don't, dMC's and dAP's configs are opened by passing a tag to the dap and dmc exe's. So if you try to run the config while the program is running, it won't work.

OK I give up. I'll just live with the program as is. I'l just continue to set association through Windows. If and when there is an update maybe it will install the correct files in the correct place and I'll be able to use the feature in dBpowerAmp.

All I can think of is that something in your system is now preventing you from installing things properly, in particular if it involves modifying registry keys, as file associations would. Have you got some such program? Anyhting in the XP security settings? Spybot?

how would SpyBot S&D affect installing software?

I think SpyBot (or maybe another similar program) can be set to prevent modifications to registry keys. It may either block them outright, quietly, or inform you and ask permission.
