If I wish to encode my .wav files into a lossy format, how does .ogg compare to musepack?

You may want to refer to Spoon's Audio Guide at http://www.dbpoweramp.com/spoons-aud...de-formats.htm . -
Re: Encoding
I have used both. I prefer Musepack. With Musepack I prefer the Extreme preset and with Ogg the High Quality setting (which is around 224 kbs vbr). I have selected these settings for each codec based on the approximate point at which increases in bitrate do not yield any further improvement in sound for me (on my equipment, based on the types of music I listen to). At these settings, Ogg will produce a slightly smaller file but take a longer to convert. I do not have a P4 processor, therefore I am unable to use the Ogg P4 codec which would be faster. At these levels, both codecs do very well. I find that Ogg is somewhat more bottom heavy in sound and may overaccentuate reverberation or other a few other effects and that Musepack produces somewhat more even response throughout the acoustic spectrum.
If you prefer a higher level of compression, by reputation Musepack would generally be considered superior at bitrates of about 160 kbs and above but below that Ogg, especially the newest Ogg codec (r12 now in beta from the Beta Test section of this forum) would probably be considered better be considered better.
I would encourage you to do your own trials to help determine the format and settings that will work best for you.
Best wishes,
