Wma to mp3

Help! I've installed dMC and the V9 and 1.3b codecs but when I try to convert a wma file it tells me that I need to install the codecs! I've followed the instructions and rebooted. What is going on?

A little more detailed info please:

- Environment: OS and version, service packs installed
- Did you install dMC and the codecs all in the same folder?
- What are the specs of the wma finput ile you want to convert? Could it be protected?
- What are the specs of the mp3 output file you want to convert to?

I saw this post so I figured I would add my problem to it.

Ok When I try to convert a .wma file to mp3(lame) I get this error message

The file 'K:\Media\Music\Nickleback, Three Doors Down\01 Flat on the Floor.wma' is encrypted which dMC is not able to decode.

Now according to what I have read in the various FAQ sections, this file could be encrypted,

have been DRM Protected by creator cannot be converted or played

but I was able to rip it and play it.


Then I saw the thing about the dbpowerAMP auxillary thing, but I dont think this applies to this. If it does indeed, then I am going to have figure that out. lol If not here are my system particulars.

MediaPlayer 7 - what I used to rip the files
I did follow all instructions on the codec installation
And I am not sure of how to find the specs on the wma file
I wanted to convert it to studio quality mp3

any help would be appreciated.

If you are using WMP 7 for ripping, the default setting for WMP 7 ripping is to encrypt the file. Such a file can be played by WMP but not by other applications. Some instances of WMA encryption reportedly defeat attempts to re-record the tracks and may harm the original files if you try to do so. This is based upon what I have read from others.

This encryption can be turned off and I would suggest you do this, if you have not already done so. This will not change the encryption of files you have already ripped, but it will assure that future rips with wma 7 will not be encrypted.

As to the files you have, yes-if you can play them you can try re-recording them off of the sound card using dMC Auxilary Input but I would try this first with some expendible files (ones you can easiliy re-rip, tracks you have duplicates of) before you try this with files you cannot easily replace.

Specs on the wma file can be found in the tag information listing.

Now there are some instances where you may have a need to convert wma to mp3. However, you cannot improve the quality of an audio file by converting it to another format (whether lossy or lossless), or by converting it to higher bitrates. You may know this already but I mention it in case you did not. Generally, where you have the option you will do better to re-rip your tracks directly to mp3 studio quality than you would be converting tracks ripped to a lossy format (like wma).
