Hey I recently updated my windows media player to V.10 but I forgot that the dbpower codec I have to convert is for V.9 so now I can't convert to WMA anymore. Anyone know where I can download an update for V.10 or if its even available yet? and if not when it will be? Thank You

Re: WMA Converter Codec for WM v.10?
The wma v9 codec will work with WMP 10, although you may run into some problems initially.
What I would recommend is using the WMA 9.1 codec (which is apparently what WMP 10 uses-go figure!) currently in beta here:
New release for WMA 9.1. First install the WMA 9.1 system codecs: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codecs/db-wmfdist95.exe 5MB then the new dBpowerAMP Codec: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/beta/dBpowerAMP-codec-wmav91.exe 210KB
Spoon's instructions are to download the system files for wma 9.1 first and then the codec. Spoon is the person responsible for the dBpowerAMP Programs. It has been suggested that if you have WMP 10 that the system files are not needed. While this was certainly the case with WMP 9 and the WMA v9 codec, I tend to think (without knowing this for certain) that you still want to install the system files for WMA v9.1 even if you have WMP 10. Spoon should be back in a few days. Perhaps he can shed some light on this. You can try it either way but if you don't install the system files you will need to uninstall the WMA 9.1 codec before you install the system files.

Re: WMA Converter Codec for WM v.10?
K...I went there, dl'ed both files, installed them as instructed, went to the file i wanted to convert, clicked convert to wma and still got the pop up window that says
Error Whilst Converting:
The CODEC required to compress 'File Locations Here' could not be opened.
...now what?
All I've done differently since the last time I've used it was update to WMP V.10 thats why I think that seems to be the problem, that it doesn't work on WMP V.10 only V.9...is that the case?Comment

Re: WMA Converter Codec for WM v.10?
Did you restart the computer before tryiong your conversion?
If not, please try that (and accept my apologies for neglecting to mention that step, as well). Let us know if that changes anything.
If that does not work, can you tell us the characteristics of your source file (format, frequency, bitrate, channels) and the characteristics of the wma file you are trying to create?
Best wishes,

Re: WMA Converter Codec for WM v.10?
It's ok don't worry about it I was thinking about that also, so I just restarted and tried once more and still no luck, same message pops up.
The original File characteristics: .wav,3072kbps,16bit,stereo,96khz,PCM
and the settings on the converter when I try to convert are @ :.wma,192kbps,44khz,stereo CBR
...Now I don't know all too much about the property value of the files and all that but I am positive that I can bring the original file down to 44khz...should I tried doing that and update with the new characteristics of the original file???Comment

Ok, how about trying to first convert to 16-bit wav (PCM) at 44.1KHz (uncompressed) folowed by a conversion to wma of the specifics you're attempting?Comment

Re: WMA Converter Codec for WM v.10?
I tried converting a 16 bit, 96 khz PCM wav file to WMA v9 at your specified settings and did not have trouble (on a Celeron 1.3 gHz processor, 280 mb ram and Windows XP Home SP1). I do NOT have wmp 10 installed, only wmp 9.
Can you convert to any other format (mp3, ogg, monkeys, flac)?
When you installed dBpowerAMP Music COnverter did you install it to its default location and did you install the wma v9.1 codec to its default location?Comment

I have a Dell (Pentium 4, 2.66Ghz,512 mb ram, WinXP Pro). Maybe its the PCM you're talking about...I don't think my wave file is in that format how do I change it to a PCM wav? and yea everything is installed into their defaults.Comment

Re: WMA Converter Codec for WM v.10?
Ok...Update...I don't know why I didnt try this before but I tried to do the same thing with an MP3, Convert MP3>WMA with the same settings and It worked perfectly fine, and I also tried with another WAV file I had on my computer (1141kbps,16bit,44khz,Stereo,PCM) and it worked perfectly fine also, so could it be something is wrong with that WAV file I had tried to convert? I'll try to scale the wav down to 44khz and try to convert and let you know what happensComment

Re: WMA Converter Codec for WM v.10?
First things first...
Standard WMA has two sets of formats-regular wma and wma a/v. So wma 192 kbs 44.1 kHz stereo CBR is different than wma 192 kbs 44.1 mHz stereo (A/V) CBR.
So were you trying the second all this time or were you trying the first?
I suggested this because someone using the wma v9 codec with wmp10 reported success when they used the A/V setting rather than the regular (non-A/V) setting.
If you were trying the A/V setting all this time, you could try the plain setting. More important, if you have been trying the plain setting, try the A/V setting.
As for your question, you could try uninstalling and reinstalling the wma 9.1 codec. You could try uninstalling the wma 9.1 codec and reinstalling the wma 9 codec. If you uninstall WMP 10 and reinstall WMP 9 you will need (I think) to switch codecs backwards also.
PS I missed your update. But you could try test converting your suspect wav file. If it will not test convert it means the file cannot be read either becasue it is corrupt or because you are not able to decode it in dMC (you might not have or there may not be a decoder). If it will test convert, but not do the conversion you want, then you may need to do an intermediate conversion. You should be able to convert to wav, 44.1 khz PCM.
Best wishes,

Re: WMA Converter Codec for WM v.10?
Okay, So after it all, I just made a new WAV file @ 44khz 16 bit and tried it again and it worked perfectly fine. I guess it was b/c it was 96khz!? Thank you Bill and ChristinaS for all your help.
How do I switch the settings to A/V and Normal for future references though?Comment
