.m4a decode - can't open file

I've ripped many of my CDs to .m4a format using iTunes. I would like to convert them to .mp3 format to use on a gen2 iPod. I get error message can't open file. I've read the previous posts on this error however as I've ripped my own CDs I don't understand what could cause this. Any help appreciated as I don't want to re-rip all the CDs.

The gen 2 iPod can play .m4a files (update the firmware).
