mp4 isn't necessarily inferior to mp3. It depends on the listener and the quality of their audio equiptment. If he's like most people, he'll never notice a difference.
However, if the mp3s are a low bitrate, they'll still sound crappy when made into mp4. Why are you wanting to convert to mp4?
Edit: audio equiptment, not audio quality :D

You are correct....MP4 IS NOT inferior to MP3, PROVIDED both have been produced from the same wave file (in fact, MP4 is somewhat better in this case).
HOWEVER, when any lossy format file is converted to another lossy format file, the result will be inferior to the original lossy format file. Whether or not the difference is audibly detectable will depend on the individual, as well as on the type of music.
