Can't rip CD's

I have installed the music converter on dozens of computers and never had a problem....until now. This machine has a removable boot drive - one boots WIN98, the other boots XP. Under Win98, everything works fine. Under XP, I get the following message when trying to rip:

[COLOR=DarkRed]CODEC decompression error for '\\CdRom\Track08.cda'
Unable to Rip track - make sure correct Ripping method is selected and CD Drive supports digital audio extraction.[/COLOR]

Yes...the correct ripping method is selected.
Yes...the CD drive supports digital audio extraction.
I tried changing the CD communication protocol from ASPI (it works under 98) to 2000/NT as suggested in another posting....no luck.
I installed the latest beta release,,,,no luck.
Any suggestions?
On another matter, even though screen resolutions and font sizes are the same as my 98 installation, the labels are truncated and screwed up on the XP installation.....

Does this same cd get ripped ok in W 98, using the same cd drive? Especially that particular track?

In XP, can you play that same cd & track using any media player?

Can you convert the track from Windows Explorer and using dMC?

First, do you have the correct source drive selected? it's under options.
Second, is digital audio turned on for that drive? This is in device manager.
Next, did you try NT/2000 or NT/2000 Built-In (Limited)
Also, XP does not include ASPI by default, it must be manually installed.
Try a test conversion, to see if it is the codec or just dMC not being able to read the file. Make sure you don't have "delete source file on conversion" checked also.

I am getting the same error message "CODEC decompression error...unable to rip track..." , but only when converting the [COLOR=DarkRed]first[/COLOR] track of my cd. All the other tracks on the CD converted without any problem at all. I've tried converting that one track to wma and mp3.


What do you do when only one track will not convert?
One other thing: That one track will not play on my laptop in any program, but plays perfectly in CD player.

This is a form of copy protection being increasingly used to discourage ripping cd tracks to your computer.
First try re-setting your dMC Audio CD Configuration (Start>All Programs>dBpowerAMP Music Converter>Configuration>dMC Audio CD Configuration) from ASPI to 2000/NT Built-In (Limited).
If that does not help, turn Table of Contents Detection off as per the instructions here: http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=5081

I have found that when this happens and some tracks cannot be ripped or are ripped with crackles and other noises, if I use dMC rather than dMC Audio CD Input and convert those particular tracks separately it works just fine.

Noticed one more thing when I try to rip... a slight bucking sound for the first few seconds while the CD player light flashes. After 4 seconds or so, the light goes solid and the bucking noise stops. Soon after, I get the decompression error message.

This track plays just fine in a CD player. It's a good song too.

Help!!
