    WMA to MP3 decoding problem

I am trying to convert WMA files to MP3s.

It told me I needed the codec pack for it, so I followed the instructions for the Windows Media Audio codec pack - I downloaded the WMA v9 System Codecs and then the WMA v9 Codec Release 1.3b, installed them, and then restarted my computer.

I got an error when I tried to convert any WMA file that read "The file 'file name' is encrypted which dMC is not able to decode." I even tried to download the first older release, WMA v8 Codec R4.

The problem may be that I am now using Windows Media Player 10, which I downloaded a few weeks before I downloaded dbpowerAMP today. Is there anything I can do if I'm using version 10?

    Not much.
The problem is not one that having the right codec or right version of Windows Media Player will solve. The problem is that the file is essentially locked for outside use.
This was default setting for WMA versions 7 and below and it remains an option in later versions.
If you are lucky, you might be able to play this file in WMP and record it from the soundcard using dMC Auxilary Input. But this might fail as well due to the type of encryption methods used in WMA.
