dbPowerAmp normalizes wav though the normalize checkbox is unchecked

I am using the program to resample CD quality wav files (whose channels are identical) to 22.050 Hz mono files and I want to keep the volume as it was in the source.

I have 44.100 Hz stereo source wav that has -6 dB peak (for example) on both channels, and I want to convert it to 22.050 Hz destination mono file. The dbPowerAmp sums the channels so that the -6 dB peak in stereo file is -3 dB in mono file. Seems that dbPowerAmp takes 100% from the source left channel and 100% from the source right channel to get the mono result.

Is there any way to make dbPowerAmp to take 50% from the source left channel and 50% from the source right channel? This would prevent the destination mono file from clipping when the source file is louder than -3 dB.

Just a suggestion, as I haven't encountered this problem yet, and can't seem to reproduce it with the file I just tried.

I assume you're not using any Powerpak DSP effect there by default to normalize the volume.

Have you tried first converting to 44.1KHz mono? Does it still boost the volume? If that's ok, then convert to 22KHz. What's it like then?

I would not like to make conversion in multiple parts. My idea is to make my PC to batch compress multiple files that will take hours.

I was using dB PowerAmp 10 with no DSP effects, just a normalize checkbox there.

      ABOUT THE BETA 11

I installed the dbPowerAmp 11 beta just a moment ago and tried several normalization values within the DSP. Seems that my problem is solved if I set fixed normalization value less than ln 2 (about 0.693147) and I use only the Fixed normalization.

The other DSP normalization options (in beta) than fixed seem to have no effect no matter what values I put in there. The only DSP normalization that cares about the value I set is the Fixed normalization:

Simple normalization works just like the version 10: it boosts the volume no matter what I put in the "Desired volume" textbox. The adaptive normalization does not work any better. It boosts the volume even if I set desired volume to only 1% of maximum!

I don't know if the basic DSP effects that come along with the beta 11 are free. I will have to take a look on the license.

I illustrated the problem on the web page:

Oh, I was only suggesting the 2-step conversion as a means to find where the problem lies actually, not as a final solution.

It was specifically done like this otherwise if the sum was left / 2 and right / 2, the final volume is normally not correct. Anyhow the DSP effects are the right way, use Volume Quieten and set it to .6 like you did.
