Maximum ripping speed (on XP) - from the FAQ

In the FAQ forum, the posting "How do I get maximum ripping speed? (Windows XP)" suggests disabling all the IDE controllers and then rebooting, to enable DMA.

This may be a silly question, but my system disk is on an IDE drive. Is it safe to do this? I'd hate to disable all the controllers and then have Windows fail to start because it couldn't find the system drive...

    Paranoid, I know...

You've got to have some faith at some point though, that things will work as planned. In an ideal world all would work as stated :D

And, on the other hand, unless you have a concrete need to maximize your ripping speed (a better reason than the geek testerone rush of very fast conversion or to lay claim to having a faster converter than all your friends), why worry about it?

While dMC claims to have superior ripping speed I use it because it results in high quality conversions, because it handles a wide variety of formats, and because it is very user-friendly. Speed is usually very nice but since I routinely engage in behaviors that impede maximum ripping speed (listening to music, running other programs while ripping) this is obviously not a priority for me.

But that it just my opinion.
      Best wishes,

Cool - it worked! Disable the hard disk controller, then boot off that disk. Isn't Windows strange...?

Thanks for the reassurance. In my defence, I had seen other advice on this problem which turned out to be assuming a SCSI CD drive.

Ripping happily at high speed again,
        Paul.

No reason, other than the speed got broken my my ill-advised use of another program's "advanced" feaures, and it rankles with me that I broke it.

Rather than disable it you are best to remove the controller, then windows will find the new one on restart. A fresh start.
