I know that an AVI file means that there is some video aswell as audio but I wish to just keep the audio and put it into an mp3 file.
Does dBpowerAMP have an avi codec?

No it does not.
You might be able to record the audio off of an avi file by recording it from the soundcard as it plays, using dMC auxilary input.

You might try VirtualDub for this purpose (suggested by former(?) moderater totalXSive) two years ago more or less. The link is here:
