A question on creating cd's please

I created a cd on a CD-R cd. The songs will play in my pc very well.

When i put the cd into a table top cd-player, it will spin for a couple seconds then flash "no CD", i.e., no music at all.

Is this because the cd is actually a CD-R and not an audio cd?

Most likely that is the reason for your problem. CD players tend to be much fussier about the qualities of the reflective coating of the disc. PC's are far less so. This is the difference between so-called "audio" or "music" cd-r's and regular cd-r's.

CD players which say they will play cd-r's should generally be able to play a regular cd-r disc fine. If not, it may be a matter of the brand of cd-r you use. Some cd players will play regular cd-r's even though they do not claim to do so. On the other hand, unless a cd player specifically says it will play a cd-rw disc I am almost certain it will not.

Wait, CD-R and audio CD are not mutually exclusive.

Audio CD refers to what you put on the cd: audio tracks (cda) vs. data files (e.g. mp3's). CD-R is a one-time use cd to be contrasted with Cd-RW which can be reburned repeatedly.


So it all depends on how you created the cd. If you created an audio CD, then whatever files you selected to burn there internally get converted to wav and then get burned as cda tracks. You must close the CD as well for it to be recognized in a audio cd player as a valid audio cd. It depends on what software you use to burn. Some always close the cd, others (e.g. Nero) have to be told to finalize it in the various options.

If you created a data cd, where you have put the files as taken from your pc (e.g. mp3's, wma's, etc), then this can only be played in a computer or mp3 player or whatever device that understand those formats. Ordinary cd players that play only audio cd's wil not recognize this as a valid audio cd - because it isn't.

Of course, as Xioas said, the quality of the cd (e.g. the reflective coating) may affect it's usability in a cd player, especially some of the older ones that are quite finicky. CD-R's sold specifically for music are supposedly better for making audio cd's than run-of-the mill cheapie brands that are better suited to data cd's. Personally I have rarely had problems with this, but it has happened on occasion when trying to play a burned audio cd in a very expensive (presumably high-quality ) hi-fi system. No problem playing it in my cheap kitchen boombox.

Ok, so i bought some Sony CD-R Music CD's.
I created a new cd and they show as "Track1 - Track22" with a cda extension.

Again, they will play on my pc but when i put it into a boom-box cd reader,
notthing......

Open to any/all suggestions,

Ok, so i bought some Sony CD-R Music CD's.
I created a new cd and they show as "Track1 - Track22" with a cda extension.

What software did you burn them with? Did you finalize the cd (or close it as it is sometimes referred to)?

dbmusic converter.

I might mention here that the cd player (boombox) is a couple years old.
So, i havent ruled that out as maybe being the problem.

Test it out (find a regular cd to play in the boombox) and let us know the results.

I believe that dBpowerAMP CD Writer automatically closes (or finalizes) audio cd's after writing them.

I can't speak for the dBpowerAMP CD-Writer, (and I hope I'm not confusing the issue) but some burning software have O/S (operating system) options that may have to be selected or checked to enable most CD-players to recognize it.

My burner software requires that "ISO Compatible" be selected if I want to make a regular CD that will play on any player. Don't know if this is relavent in this case.

Did you select Standard Audio CD 74 min? Some cd players may not be able to handle longer cd's, regardless of what the cd itself can accomodate. And make sure you didn't select MP3 Audio CD becaue that is a data cd.

And yes, dMC CD Writer finalizes the cd or rather doesn't give the option to do it or not.

I don't want to say that this might not be the case but I must say that I use 80 minute (700 mb) cd's and I have not run into this issue.

May I assume that you have checked out the boombox and found that it will play regular cd's?

I will need to get hold of a "modern" cd player and check out the cd's there.

The second cd i created was the same as the first (different music) and
i made sure the standard 74 cd was selected. The defaults were used in all cases (write speed = x12, etc,etc).

Will post an update after i check a modern cd player.

Ok, silly question but it has happened to me: did you put the boombox on CD? I know for mine I have to slide a little button over ever so slightly to shift it from radio to cd to tape. Easy to miss. And then also the side of the cd that is recorded. Some cd players take them right side up, others up side down.

Yes it was on cd. Mine has a big button on it and i can see the laser on
the bottom of the cd mount so it goes face down.

I tried it on a friends cd player (another boombox) and it did play but the
songs seemed to have skips in them. The first one would start over after
only a few seconds of play. Had to use the advance to go to another track.

Think i'll try another one.
