    MP3 to MP4 - PLEASE HELP :)))

Please excuse my ignorance, as I am a novice and would really appreciate your expertise.

I've downloaded the software for one simple purpose - to convert MP3 to MP4 to use on a cell phone for ringtones. However, the general codec pack does not give me the option to convert to MP4. I tried getting the MP4 decoder (thinking that's what I needed), but that wouldn't do anything.
I spent an hour trying to find some sort of a help thread, but couldn't find anything useful.
I noticed that people refer to a m4p2mp4.exe file. Would that show the "Convert to" MP4 option in the software? If I am still looking at the wrong spot, would someone kindly point me in the right direction?

    Please help

You have to download the mp4 specific codec from Popular codecs, also at Codec Central. Just look on that page and you'll find it.

      Christina,

Thanks for your reply. While I was waiting for someone to respond, I kept playing around with the program. I actually needed an encoder, which I found by trial and error.
I installed the QuickTime one, but it only gives me a M4a format, whereas I needed an MP4 format. Then I installed the Nero encoder, thinking that my Nero 5.something will do. I have a registered version, but the codec didn't show. Any suggestions?

      Thank you.

hmmmm...actually now I could also see a "Converting 1 file to" --> Nero AAC, but still no Nero MP4. What am I doing wrong?
        Obviously my Nero was recognized...why don't I see MP4?

Thank you for your time and help.

Sorry, I am on a computer where I don't have Nero, no burner at all. I can't play around with any of this right now.

This seems to be the way this codec works. It will show as Nero AAC but after you convert it will show as an mp4 file. So you should be able to go ahead and use it.

You are best trying the FAAC codec first.

Could you please explain a little more about why the FAAC codec would be best and whether this preference applies to this specific application or is a general recommendation? I must admit that with the number of encoders available it is not clear how to best pick and choose between them, at least to me (I did review the results of the listening poll). I, and I am sure others, would appreciate your input on this issue.

                Thanks and best wishes,

It is the best 'free' aac encoder, have a look on the codec central mp4 page, there is a link to quality tests of all those.

Interesting, for which cell phone are you trying to do this? I'm asking, because sometimes there is a lot of confusion about AAC, MP4 and M4A files and what software/hardware can play what. For example I know that some newer Nokia phones are able to play AAC files, also as ringtones, but not MP4 yet.

However, the general codec pack does not give me the option to convert to MP4. I tried getting the MP4 decoder (thinking that's what I needed), but that wouldn't do anything.
Like Spoon answered, one option would be using FAAC that can output all relevant file formats. Nero 5.5.x is able to do this, too, but you would have to download, install and pay an additional AAC coded from their website (US$ 15.00) or get the demo version of Nero 6 with 50 free test encodings.

I noticed that people refer to a m4p2mp4.exe file. Would that show the "Convert to" MP4 option in the software?
No, that refers to a tool for removing the Apple specific DRM on their iTunes Music Store downloads with file extension *.m4p.
