You must have Real Player or Real One installed. You must also download the codecs from Codec central both for real media and for mp3 (unelss you're using the regular mp3 codec built into dMC by default).

However take note that the mp3 codec will eventually cease being part of the default package due to patent restrictions. Not sure where that stands right now ( http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=5399 ) .

Re: Converting Real Media Files to Mp3

I finally got RA & RM files to play in WinAmp without having real player
installed (took me long enough to get it straight). It works now with real alternative (and the TARAWIN plugin (for winamp).

So what i can do now is play the ra/rm file in winamp and use the AUX Converter to output the mp3 files.

INFO: The problem before was that i also had the KLM Codec Pack installed.
Soon as i took it out, it worked just fine.

        thanks,

Yes, indeed, Real Alternative and the codecs - if Winamp is what you have your heart set on.

I am a bit more conservative and don't like mixing flavors.

I am happy to let Real Player play its own stuff - but only its own stuff. The rest can go through Windows Media Player, my old faithful friend and, when needed, Quicktime. I don't use fancy encoding, so I don't need others generally. But I do have a whole bunch of other players that I take out of their box and dust them every so often, update them and so on, just in case.

            ChristinaS,

To each their own. There's a lot to be said for keeping it simple (i'll leave
off the other 's' because it dont apply here).

I like winamp for the visualizations (milkdrop is a great one) but for just the
sound, ease of use and the other supporting programs the dB has it, hands down.

dB is a great one indeed. However I also deal with lots of video files that require a player like WMP, or Real Player for the rm videos.

In the end it's all a matter of having choices.

                ChristinaS,
Have you tried the Media Player Classic?
It will play just about any video/audio file including real player files (with the
                real alternative/quicktime alternative codec).

                  No, I haven't. I see it's from Sourceforge.

I told you I am conservative! :p But I have another more compelling reason for my reluctance to rely on other players.

I mostly need to make sure audio & video files play properly streamed in Windows Media Player when they are posted on the web, at various bit rates, as this is the one player most people have by default. I sometimes provide a Real Media version as well for various other reasons (which, to tell you truthfully, escape me right now :smile2: )

If I can burn rax to cd, then rip it to wma with Windows Media Player, why can't WMP rip it while it's still on my hard drive, convert it to wma and save it. It's simply reading the filed from the cd and converting it and saving it to the hard drive. What's up with that?

Your burning it as an audio CD, not a data CD. The original audio file incorporates copy-protection to keep you from illegally sharing the file. There is an entire forum dedicated to dealing with copy-protected files.

Thread is a year old, locked.

Re: Converting Real Media Files to Mp3

                        Squire-
If you convert real audio to regular cd format you are, of course, changing the format from Real Audio to standard CD format. WMP cannot play the original real audio file but it can play the cd file and convert it as well.
It is possible, if you can locate the temporary file created for burning the cd, to convert that file (although this may not be possible in every case).
Since this thread was started, there has been significant improvement to the dBpowerAMP real audio decoder codec which probably makes that now a preferable method for dBpowerAMP users for dealing with converting real audio files (at least for non-streaming real audio files).

                        Best wishes,
                        Bill
