    which is best way to

convert either RA or RM files: to Wav then to MP3 or go straight to MP3?

Goal is better sound quality, file size is not a problem.

    thank you,

I personally prefer to always convert to 16-bit 44.1 KHz stereo wav (if appropriate) no matter from what format I start. I may end up making adjustments to the sound quality on the wav file as well, it all depends. Thereafter I can convert to anything else I want.

I'm not sure that either method will result in better quality especially as you are starting out with a compressed source.

        Thanks.

I have noticed that the wav files seem to be a bit larger than mp3 files and
no noticable difference in quality, at least i can't hear any. You're right, RA/RM
is not the best input but it seems like thats about all you can find for
free on the web these days. At least for the "Oldies" (50's, 60's) R&R/Country.

I'm kinda tone deaf anyway. Wife says i
couldnt carry a tune in a bushel basket if i had the philarmonic helping me.

Spoon's guide to the various Audio formats is quite helpful. See the link at the top of the page.

Oh, I'm only converting to wav because this is a good way to ensure I can easily convert to other things later if I need it, and also because I often do touch ups on the files, or work with them in other software like Record Producer or Anvil Stdio which don't understand many formats to start with.
