Where do you get to use the 24-bit wav files? CD quality is 16-bit, 44.1KHz after all.

Whataver you used to create the 24-bit wav can probably also create it as 16-bit wav 44.1KHz.

But check this thread too http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthre...9720#post19720

I'm making them in Sonar. There are some advantages to recording in 24 bit, even though the end result has to be dithered down to 16 for final mix.

Re: cannot convert wav to mp3

I think basicaly he wants a shortcut to converting to mp3 from the original 24-bit wav file, without going through the regular 16-bit, 44.1 KHz.

If mp3 were totally lossless, it would make sense to compress in order to do a file exchange with an internet collaborator who can decompress, add to it using similar recording software, recompress and ship back.

As it is, even if dMC could compress a 24-bit wav file to mp3, it is lossy so all benefit would be wiped out. It would become interesting if the lossless compression formats could be used.

                  Christina,
I appreciate your help, but you're spending alot of effort second-guessing that I want to do this at all. Your reasons why not are all very well, but the fact remains that I often have 24 bit .wav files that I need to convert to .MP3, whether-or-not you approve! <g> I have good reasons for this beyond what you are assuming. I'm on a mixing group, and we sometimes share what we are working on with the other members. I'm working in 24-bit on some projects (better head-room) and often want to shoot an MP3 out there for comment. With the right codec, Winamp *does* play 24 bit files, you know. In the meantime, I'll just keep on dithering.

It's not a question of my approving of anything. If you just want to convert in one step as opposed to 2 simple steps, well, it's not available yet.

                    Over and out.

Organfreak, ChristinaS was only offering help. we had to second guess because you lacked giving us more detail on why or how you wanted something done so we could then find out what was possible. you have taken good help and twisted the wrong way. we are not like that here.

comming back to specifically make one post to say: "Oh Good! Does this means you'll stop arguing with it then?" is what we call the first signs of trolling. if you don't like the way we offer help then maybe we can't help you.

I am far from a troll-- in fact, I found out that this common error message, the subject of a number of messages, can occur if a 24 bit .wav file is used, and posted that info in case that was the cause of other's problems with this.

Again, I was made to feel uncomfortable because I was told there was no good reason to do what I wanted to do. I didn't think I should have had to justify my request.
