How to use DSP effects w/o converting

This has perplexed me. The answer could be obvious. When I want to alter a track but have no need to change the format, it seems that the a conversion is done even if I select the same format (ie Mp3 128 to Mp3 128). Isn't the converter working unnecessarily, taking longer, and possibly lossing quality because of the unnecessary conversion activity? In other words, can I make the alterations and simply skip the format conversion? I don't see any option available except maybe the "same as source" choice.
    Thanks.......Ron

To my understanding if you run Dbpoweramp Audio player Version 3 Beta 4, you can utilize all the DSP's actively as you play the files.

Going from mp3 >> mp3 will loose a little quality each go, that is the only way if DSP effects are being used.

The Audio Player only has a few DSP effects.
