Problem with tags when converting from m4a/mp4

    Hi,

I have a problem with missing tags when converting m4a/mp4 files. Only the song title and track number make it onto the converted file.

When I use the explorer pop-up to view the m4a/mp4 tag it only shows the tile and track number but Tag&Rename and iTunes both shows all the tags.

I am using v10.1 of db and Release 2 of the FAAD MP4 Decoder.

I have tried all settings of tag writing in the configuration and changing the extension from m4a to mp4.

I have also converted to WMA and I get the same result.

Do you have any idea what is wrong?

Take an mp3 file (fully tagged), convert it with dMC to Mp4 - do all the tags show up?

      Spoon,

yep, no problems with the tags when creating an mp4 file from an mp3 file. All tags show up in the explorer popup and Tag&Rename.

I am using the MP4 (CLI) encoder, Release 1 (AACEnc v2)

I then converted the MP4 back to MP3 and the tags transferred OK. I suppose this suggests some kind of problem with the tags on my m4a files. I should have thought to try this. Doh.

I forgot to mention that the m4a files were alll ripped from CD on a MAC.

      Any ideas?

      Paul

        iTunes ripped the files?

Yes, on a Powerbook, which I no longer have.

Re: Problem with tags when converting from m4a/mp4

Got exactly the same problem. MP4 from iTunes have nice Tags (as can be seen in Winamp), however do not get converted to MP3. (otherwise the file plays o.k.)

Using Tag&Rename it is possible to copy/Paste the Tags from the mp4 file to the mp3. However its not feasible as you can only copy one by one, and I have about 200 files that I want to convert...

              Any new result lately?

              Thanks

              Mike

I compared the File I got from iTunes with the file converted from mp3 in a hex editor. The meta information in the converted file is at the end of the file with the string "^meta" in front. In the file I got from iTunes, the meta information is in the first quarter of the file and the string is missing. Maybe that is the reason why dMC fails to retrieve the information from the file.

Oh, there is also a "meta" string at a different place in the file and there is some information I can read in the explorer popup close to it, but the rest of the information I can see in the popup is pretty far away (>400,000 bytes) from that position.

Try the Apple lossless codec, it can decode mp4 (in Beta section of this web).
