Converting .wma to mp3 - the file could not be opened? Please help

Hi all. I recently bought a song through Sanity Music in Australia ($1.99 per track). It is in .wma format, and I want to convert it to an mp3 so that I can
burn it to an mp3 disc to listen to in my car. However, every time I try,
the message "The file... could not be opened. Unable to open file" appears.
I desperately want this file as an mp3, what can I do?

Is there anyone here that can help? It would be much appreciated...

    Thanks.

usually those wma files are encrypted so you cant convert them.

you can however try auxiliary input so you can record what you play at the same time and convert it to any format you want.

dBpoweramp Music Converter - mp3 converter, FLAC, WAV, AAC and Apple Losslesss. Free Download (21 day full trial), start converting today

Thanks for the reply. How do I go about doing the 'auxiliary' thing, and do I need any special sound recording stuff for my computer to do it? I'm running Windows 2000...

you need nothing special. i just tested it on my laptop and was surprised it simply worked first go, nothing to do except start dap music player to play the tune you want to record and then check your setting in auxiliary input and then just press record. although i had to press it twice fro it to start recording. read through the instructions also for extra tips/advice.

          this is the liscence info:

          License Information for track:

          # Lifetime License
          # Transfer to Protected Device Enabled: Number of Transfers 3
          # CD Burning Enabled: Number of Burns 1

i havent tried it yet but i will because there are a lot of tracks for .89 cents there that i will get :D

well that was a horrible experience to say the least!!

i purchased a track and was a litle put off about having to only play it in wmp and even then you have to go through a log in process to where you bought it from and then you can play it. do that each day i want to play it? bugger that. anyhow here is a sample only of me using auxiliary input to record wmp playing a drm protected file. i do believe this is a high quality recording. i recorded directly to ogg/192

            sample recording only

actually it could have been better. i think this one is a better example: sample 2

this was listed as a freebie with limitations as follows:
              and this liscence agreement:

              1. protected content
              2. playback expires on 6/13/04
              3. copy to cd not allowed
              4. copy to portable player expires on 6/13/04
              5. copy to an sdmi-compliant portable not allowed

              i love "auxiliary input"

Thanks for your replies guys. I couldn't get the auxilary thing to work, but I was finally able to convert the track to an MP3. I burnt it to a disc as a normal music track using the instructions on the website (through Windows Media Player), then I ripped it using CD X-tractor, and from there I was able to convert it from a wma to an MP3 using Cool MP3 WAV converter. Pretty convoluted process, but the sound quality is as good as any other MP3 I have converted from my CD's... :D
