Silent MP3s when ripping from CD

I'm trying to rip to low-rate Lame MP3s from CDs play fine as audio discs in my drive. They're quite long - average track is about 50 minutes. AudioCDInput seems to run happily, and the resulting MP3 plays fine - but it's silent.

Any thoughts?

Try to a different bitrate, or to wave, do they play ok?
