after converting mpg to mp3 the mp3 file plays in fast motion

after i convert a mpeg file to mp3, the converted file plays very fast.
for example a 15 second mpg file is converted to 10 second mp3 file and it plays in fast motion. what is the problem?

New mp3 codec soon (4 weeks), perhaps will solve the problem.

      I'm having the same problem.

Which mp3 codec should I download and install to fix this?

      Thanks,
      George

Try the dMC r11 beta, downloadable from the beta section. It has a new mp3 decoder (mad).

          Thanks Bill,

Unfortunately the Beta version would not recognize the mpeg file.

          Any other suggestions?

          George

Perhaps try the WIndows Media Encoder and see what it can do. You want basically to strip audio from a video.

Or any of the video editting programs out there. Stoik has a new free one out that may just do that. I haven't installed it yet, but there's quite a nifty little free package available by the looks of it.

What are the settings for the mpeg file you are trying to create? Specifically, what is the MPEG #, the Layer # and the bitrate?
It may be that you are trying to decode an mp2 (which should show, I believe, as MPEG 1, Layer 2) file. Generally, an mp3 codec should be able to read such a file but there do seem to be cases where anomalies arise. You could try downloading and installing either or both of the mp2 codecs.
You could also see whether you can convert your mpeg file to wav without trouble and then converting the wav to mp3.
The same symptoms also arise if you try to convert to certain settings (true of mp3, ogg and probably other codecs as well). Just because the program will allow you to try to convert to say mp3 at a rate of 32 kbs doesn't mean you can actually do this and get a good result.
If you can play the file ok you could also record it off of your soundcard using auxilary input.
              Please keep us posted.

PS Christina's advice is awfully good too.

                George-
I have since run across some other possibilities to address this problem.
You might try the ideas in this thread:
everytime i convert an mpg file to mp3, wav or wma the file is always sped up...they sound like chipmunks...any1 know why it is doing that and how to fix it? thanx. -jos

Let us know what you try and what works.
