Problem converting old WAV file to WMA

I have successfully converted WAV files to WMA before, but today I tried converting several small WAV files that were created in 1995, and the result was corrupted files. I got no error messages during conversion, but when I went to play the new WMA files, they started to play, then stopped after less than a second (you could hear the beginning of the sound, then it stopped). Any ideas as to what might be happening and how I can fix it? Thanks.

Try converting to mp3, does that stop the same?
