The Cost of a CRC?

Hi Folks,
Have been ripping for sometime with the CRC creation option. This seemed a good idea for files that I intend to Share on the internet. Can anyone tell me what the cost/benefit situation for CRC's is. I have no idea how the CRC's are created and if they are expensive in terms of file size, information would be very much welcomed,

I did a quick Google search, and three pages that I found all recommended turning the CRC function off. The reasons are twofold:

1. It makes the file larger than it could be.
2. Very few players understand CRCs anyway, so there's no real benefit to them.
