Is there a way to convert .avi or .mpeg to .mp3?

MPEG is easy. Get TMPGEnc and just demux the file (look through the menus, you will find).

AVI - get VirtualDubMod and open the avi file in it, make sure the audio processing is at full processing then in the file menu choose save wav.

A simple Google search will find these two tools.
