AAC Encoding Failure

During the conversion of a CD to AAC (CLI), I get a CLI encoding error consistently on track 9 of the CD (AdrianGale, Re:Program by Kivel records). I have tried it repeatedly and the same error occurs. itunes will convert it to m4a. I also have another CD which would fail under the standard MP4 codec. It converts like a dog under AAC (CLI).

What's the general theory on why they fail? Some conversion/divide by zero problem?

A follow up. The other CD, Rockhead got the following on tracks 9 and 10:

Unable to read CD, scratched disk?
CODEC decompression error for '\\CdRom\Track09.cda'
Unable to read CD, scratched disk?
CODEC decompression error for '\\CdRom\Track10.cda'
Unable to read CD, scratched disk?

The disk has only the slightest scratch.

I tried test conversion and that works fine. I tried mp4 (CLI) and that works. It is specifically the aac (CLI) I have installed. Could I have installed it incorrectly?

I currently have the Pystel mp4 encoder with the AACEnc installed second. Should I try the FAAC? What's the difference? Any idea what codec iTunes writes their m4a files with? I'm trying to encode at 160kbs but with a decent compression ratio. It looks like the m4a from iTunes is smaller than the default mp4 from dbpoweramp. In fact one song was almost 300k smaller. If I get this variation over 4000+ songs on my 30Gig iPod that is a huge space saving meaning I can squeeze on more songs.

Try faac. iTunes is CBR ie constant bitrate, faac, psytel and Nero are all VBR - to get smaller files select a lower quality.

FAAC seems to work ok. I just need to ensure a bitrate that holds sufficient sound quality to minimize loss when played back in my car stereo. You usually play things a bit louder in the vehicle and hence any bad bits in the sample will be very noticeable. I will play around with FAAC and see how things look. Thanks Spoon.
