Hello.
I use dMC to rip all of my CDs, but I use J.R. Media Center as my player. As most people probably do, I began ripping to MP3, but have since migrated to other formats. I currently use MPC for all my high-bit-rate stuff and OGG for everything else. Also, many of the artists and titles of the music I listen to have extended ascii chars in them - such as é or ö.
I am using dMC R10.1 w/ powerpack R3 and the proper codecs installed. The Media Center version is 9.1.316.
The details:
To test all the combinations, I used dMC to rip a small piece of music to all 3 formats: MP3, OGG and MPC. I opened all three files using both dBpowerAMP Audio Player and Media Center. I also used a hex editor to see what the actual bytes look like. (ALL files PLAY ok on all players - this is just about the display of tag fields.)
I stuck the three chars "mön" in the Artist field and ripped away:
MPC (ripped using dMC)
Shows in hex as "6D F6 6E", or "109 246 110",
or "mön" if looked up using the Windows Character Map utility.
The "ö" displays correctly in dBpowerAMP Audio Player.
The "ö" displays garbled (chinese-like symbol) in Media Center.
MP3 (ripped using dMC)
Shows in hex as "6D C3 B6 6E", or "109 195 182 110",
or "mön" if looked up using the Windows Character Map utility.
The "ö" displays correctly in dBpowerAMP Audio Player.
Media Center does not display any tag information at all!!??
Ogg (ripped using dMC)
Just like MP3 shows in hex as "6D C3 B6 6E", or "109 195 182 110",
or "mön" if looked up using the Windows Character Map utility.
The "ö" displays correctly in dBpowerAMP Audio Player.
The "ö" displays correctly in Media Center.
For some reason - both get this one right!
MPC (ripped using dMC, but modified in Media Center,
using its tag-edit feature.)
Shows in hex as "6D C3 B6 6E", or "109 195 182 110",
or "mön" if looked up using the Windows Character Map utility.
The "ö" displays as "ö" in dBpowerAMP Audio Player.
The "ö" displays correctly in Media Center.
A very *strange* result, to say the least.
I know you might care less about how Media Center displays files ripped by dMC, but since the process starts with dMC, I thought I'd start here. It looks like different formats have different tags - and dMC even creates different hex versions of the "ö" character. For MPC files dMC it is hex F6, but for MP3 and Ogg files dMC writes two characters to represent it: hex C3 and B6! What is the reason for this? Shouldn't there be some sort of standard??? I will be very interested to see any information on this subject.
Thanks,
Ernie.
