Proper way to convert to an AAC file for iPod?

I am having a bit of trouble with encoding a file to use on my iPod. I have been using the Nero AAC codec and have yet been able to make a file that iTunes will recognize. Is there any chance someone could tell this dumb newbie the proper way to set the Converter up? I am using the most current release - special and have the Nero codec installed. I know one of the things I need to do is rename the file to .m4a. What is the best way to do this?

    Thanks for any help offered.

Do a search for options.txt in Compression\Nero AAC (off the top of my head) open it and set the first line to .m4a from .mp4
