    Tag problems with Musepack

I am having trouble ripping CDs to .mpc format

Most of the tracks come out correctly but in some cases I get the following garbage for title: EXÐ (EX followed by two weird characters). It's exactly the same, regardless of the CD that I use and the track's real title.

I have noticed that when I look at the relevant information in Windows Explorer, these tracks are identified as ID3v1 tags, whereas the other tracks (the ones that work right) are identified as ApeTag 2.0. So it seems like the dbPoweramp is just misidentifying the tags for these files. Furthermore, I can find the correct album, title, etc. information if I open up the files in notePad. Of course, windows explorer displays the same junk as dbPowerAMP for the titles, etc. of the corrupted files.

Oddly, re-ripping the CDs results in different tracks having problems with tags every time.

    Two other notes:
I haven't used PowerPack for any of these rips.
No other format has this problem.

    Thanks for any help.

The problem is caused by certain length fields that make the word 'Tag' appear 128 bytes from the end of the file (as used by ID3v1). Is it my program that is wrongly showing it as a ID3v1 tag? or Windows Explorer (its built in column extraction of Artist, etc).

It is dbPoweramp and the enhancements that dbPoweramp made to Windows Explorer (by which I mean the box that comes up when I hold the mouse over the file) that misidentify the tag . The files that have this problem are all .mpc files and Windows column extraction doesn't say anything about them.

You are correct that the word tag appears near the end, in fact immediately before the characters EXÐ that show up as the track title.

Please send me one such file, I am in the process of updating tagging for all codecs (a huge job), it will help me to have such a test file:

Have you updated the MPC tagging?

The Musepac codec has not been updated. dMC r11 b.2 (which is in beta) features some tagging bug fixes but I don't know for sure if this would be one of them (it is NOT specifically listed).

Am already using dMC r11 b.2!
It has not fixed the problem of some MPC files showing EXÐ

Thanks for confirming that. I've had the same problem myself.

Spoon says that this problem is caused by "certain length fields."
Is there anyway to make a slight change to a file using a hex editor and get around this issue? I now have quite a few of .mpc files with tag problems that I'd like to be able to deal with somehow.

There is an updated Musepack codec. Have you tried using it?

Yeah, the new Musepack codec is only days old, not weeks, like before. Just an FYI for you, jaro.
