Applying replaygain to pre-existing lossy files

How do I use replaygain (apply) to pre-existing lossy files (MP3 and AAC, all purchased) which already have replaygain info in them? I won't be able to transcode these files because they are lossy...the replaygain DSP is only for adding replaygain info, not applying them. So how do I use replaygain (apply) on its own?

Oh! I thought I could apply replaygain to an existing MP3 file without converting it again to an MP3! Disappointed!

How could that work? Applying replay gain means that you recalculate the audio values and store them in the audio files.

Replay Gain is a different story. This method calculates only the gain values and stores them in tags. But you have to use a audio player which uses those tags.
