error when trying to convert .ape to mp3

Hi. I am totally new to this program and have version 10.
When trying to convert monkey (.ape) audio file to mp3 lame,I get this message (as I'm about to start the conversion) and prompt to shut down.

MUSICCONVERTER caused an invalid page fault in
    module MUSICCONVERTER.EXE at 0177:004032cb.

I wonder if this is a problem with my PC (Windows 98) since I have received a similar prompt when using the Explorer browser surfing the net.
    Please help!
    Thanks for your time.

Did you create the ape file? there is a known problem of the beta (in beta section of this forum) ape version and Windows 98.

    Try converting to wave.
