    How bad is transcoding?

Ok it says in the FAQ that transcoding is bad.

I want to transcode mp3 to nero mp4. In the FAQ it says that transcoding is bad because during the process the file is converted back to wav but it does not seems to be the case while doing this from mp3 to mp4.

Is it correct? Is there a software that can control the quality of the transcode?

    Thanks,

    Yvan

    Re: How bad is transcoding?

Going from Lossy (mp3) to lossy (mp4) will always loose quality, no matter what mp4 settings are used, so you are best leaving the files as mp3. Certain transcoding is ok, for example a 128Kbps ogg file to a 128Kbps mp3 file that is to be uploadedto a portable player will give suitabe results for the portable, talking about mp4 it really likes the original cd, transcoding from any lossy format seems to give worse than good results with mp4.
